The beginning of Polish Indology is inseparably connected to the person of Walenty Skorochód Majewski, the author of the first Sanskrit grammar in Polish. As with many early Indologists, he did not undergo any academic training, but devoted most of his life to propagating Indian culture, Sanskrit in particular, in Poland. Although his efforts were not much appreciated during his lifetime and his works have become obsolete now, he deserves more than being just a short footnote in a few encyclopaedic works. The following paper not only presents Majewski's writings but also depicts his turbulent life, his work as an archivist, his activity in TWPN (Warsaw Society of the Friends of Science) and his struggle for recognition among his countrymen.
