One of the valuable special collections of the National Szechenyi Library is the Collection of Small Prints, containing nearly 3,5 million documents. Obituaries constitute a particularly interesting part of the collection. Over the past years, significant efforts were made in order to restore the documents. The next step was the digitisation of nearly 600,000 documents in collaboration with a commercial partner. However, digital documents only fulfill their mission when they are provided with descriptive data and become accessible in a searchable database. As the National Library does not have the sufficient resources for the time-consuming cataloguing of this type of documents, a decision was made to involve library users into the cataloguing process. This type of collaboration is not yet a wide-spread practice in library environment, but the innovative option was taken in order to make the obituary collection accessible for readers and researchers without further delay. This article summarises the outcomes and conclusions of the digitisation project and also outlines the plans for the future.
