The fourth volume of the 'Protestant Synod Minutes' (Akta Synodów Róznowierczych) edited by Maria Sipayllo deals with church matters of Great Poland in the years 1569-1632. In it we find numerous examples that the Czech Brethren dedicated much of their attention to books. The Brethren very often urged people to be 'diligent in reading' and advised which books were important to own. This is especially evident in the early part of the volume. However they also warned against reading heretical books. On many occasions the Synod discussed matters related to publishing, editing and preparation of forthcoming editions of various works. All these books were usually for church use, especially the hymn-books. The minutes also indicate that the publishing of these books was often delayed. We do not find much information about censorship, which was rather a complicated matter, especially in connection with the congregations in Czech.
