Recently, interest in the concept of competency-based HRM has significantly increased in organizations operating on the Polish market. This growing interest is seen in the increasing frequency of implementation of competency models, but this has not, as of yet, been reflected in the form of a separate study. This article is intended to at least partially fill this gap by presenting research conducted by the author relating to 'Competency-based Human Resources Management in Companies Operating on the Polish Market' concluded at the end of November of 2003. The introduction presents an abbreviated version of study assumptions and objectives, the research method applied, and the course of the study. The second section of the article concentrates on a presentation of a part of the most important research results, with particular stress on: (1) the reasons for implementing a competency management system in the organization, and (2) areas of human resource management where competency management is applied. In light of the limited size of the article, other matters touched upon in the study, such as system scope and duration, its shape, and perceived effect, will only be mentioned.
