The paper aims to identify the main determinants of the level of health status among European residents. Health status is proxy by the life expectancy at birth. The author's analysis includes 28 countries: 25 current members of the European Union (except Cyprus and Malta) as well as Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland. The research covers the period 1993-2007. The analysis is based on quantitative data and it uses econometric techniques (correlation coefficients and regression equations). The results indicate that the most important determinants of people's health status are: high expenditures on healthcare (both public and private), high level of income (GDP), large R&D expenditures, and low number of regular daily smokers in the population. The author's results are credible because they are obtained from different countries and by different methods of data transformation.
