The article characterizes the legal position of financial cooperatives in Ukraine since 1993. Therefore some legislation governing the organization and functioning of credit union and the distinguishing characteristics of this type of institution in the financial services market are discussed in detail (in this regard the Law on Credit Unions from 2001 is characterized). The article also takes the issues of functioning of various types of cooperatives, development prospects of the credit cooperatives, at the same time describes the assumptions of the development strategy of this institutions in years 2008 - 2010.
