Several lines of electro- and psychophysical research are searching for the neural correlates of face perception. Electrophysiological studies have described a large negative wave called N170 due to its latency over the occipito-temporal areas. According to several studies N170 specifically mirrors the structural steps of face processing. At the same time during the last years behavioral adaptation studies started to investigate higher order adaptations due to face processing, i.e. specific distortions of perception. The present paper summarizes the features of N170 and its relationship to face adaptation.
