The 'art' of tattoo and piercing goes back to the ancient times. Nowadays, however, they are phenomena of the post-modern world, surrounded by delusions which bring about negative reactions. More and more young people undertake to make their bodies more colourful and interesting. This process is closely connected with our world in which the link between human beings to their bodies, their view of themselves, and their environment and culture undergo dramatic changes. Our research analysed two basic groups of questions using semi-structured interviews. First, questions about altering bodies, that is, by tattoo and piercing, and second, questions about reactions and social evaluations regarding these signs. The sample consisted of 10 men and 10 women. Most of the respondents went to a well-considered decision of making tattoo or/and piercing and not as a result of immediate excitement. Motivations show a varied picture, however, they are common in their meaning of self-expression for individuals. Furthermore, uniqueness is as important for them as self-expression.
