The compositional output of Ludomir Rózycki (1882-1953), an important composer in the Young Poland movement whose early works aroused vivid critical discussions, has not hitherto been the object of comprehensive study. The present article focuses on a limited yet important time span of his creation - the early songs of 1905-1906 (opp. 9, 12, 14, 16 and 19). The results of the songs' analyses should encourage a wider monographic approach to Rózycki's output; they indicate that the composer deserves a place in the history of Polish music besides such key figures as Mieczyslaw Karlowicz and Karol Szymanowski. Both the musical language of the songs (based on late romantic compositional technique), their attention to the details of text setting and the intrinsic linking of text and music are not inferior to the achievements of Karlowicz or young Szymanowski. They constitute an important development in the history of Polish artistic song.
