ST. PAUL'S HYMN TO CHRISTIAN LOVE IN MEDIEVAL POLISH MANUSCRIPTS - A PROJECT FOR THE CONCORDANCE OF OLD POLISH TRANSLATIONS OF THE BIBLE
Languages of publication
The authors present a project for the concordance of the Bible based on the available medieval Polish texts. The project is illustrated with Chapter 13 of the First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. E. Belcarzowa's long-term studies on the Old Polish glosses to 14th and 15th century Latin sermons manifest a need for collecting all the surviving translations of the Bible into Old Polish. The Polish glosses scattered among the Latin manuscripts are often the only source of information about what the Polish text of the Old and New Testament (other than Queen Sophia's Bible) could have looked like in the 15th century. A comparison of various translations of the same text makes possible research into problems such as synonymy in Old Polish and the relationships among the manuscripts. The material presented in the article supports the need for a complete concordance of Old Polish translations of the Bible to be compiled.
