An Ethiopic text of monastic literature entitled 'Filekseyus' is a translation from Syriac (via Arabic) of the 'Commentary on the Paradise of the Fathers' by Dadisho Qatraya, an East Syrian monk (7th century). It contains stories of the Egyptian monks composed in the form of questions (asked by 'brethren') and answers (given by an 'interpreter' or an 'old man'). The text was adopted by the West Syrians, who deleted the name of the author and attributed one of the answers to Philoxenus of Mabbog, a Syrian anti-Chalcedonian theologian. An abbreviated version was translated into Arabic and subsequently, in 1365, into Ethiopic (by the renowned metropolitan Abba Sälama). In the appendix one entry is translated and compared with a translation of Dadisho's Syriac original.
