There has been a decline in local press readership for many years now. While regional dailies (including 'Gazeta Wyborcza's' mutations) have a circulation of ca. one million and ca. 2,500 local dailies are believed to be on the market, the latter tend to be ephemeral and have low circulation. Local radio stations play mostly music and therefore are not in a position to fill the information gap. Due to its low audience reach, local television has limited success in discharging its information responsibilities. In 2005, the Polish local mass media found themselves in a very difficult position. Their situation may improve with an increase in the wealth of Polish society. According to sociological surveys, Poles profess an interest in local news.
