The article presents a historical overview of general geographical lexis in different Slavic languages. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate a varied approach to material study, principles of its processing and analysis. The attention has been paid particularly to the lexicographic study of common vocabulary, and scientific comprehension of the segment of dialectal vocabulary under study in individual regions of Ukraine. At the same time, the theoretical principles and methodological approaches to the analysis of collected and reviewed national geographical lexis in Ivano-Frankivsk region have been looked into. The conditions, peculiarities and the results of the investigation with stage-by-stage analysis of actual material are presented here. The classification of the names of geographical objects concerning the relief and water and their parts has also been introduced. They are characterized in a hierarchical order according to the following scheme: 1) class (2), 2) thematic group (5), 3) lexical-semantic group (40), 4) semantic microfield (97). National geographical lexis has been analyzed synchronously
