Józef Smietanski was a journalist, he left Poland in 1968 and died in Israel. In the memoirs penned in his late years he reminisced about his childhood spend in the township of Chmielnik (Kielce province). Smietanski's recollections contain information about day-to-day living of poor Jews in Central Poland pre-1939.
