This article is dedicated to the surnames of inhabitants of the former 'komornictwo' (jurisdiction of a 'komornik' or chamberlain) of Jeziorany in Warmia in the 17th-18th centuries. Subjected to analysis were second designations formally equivalent to common expressions. The anthroponyms were classified according to the grammatical and significative criterium of the nomina appellativa . The following types of surnames were distinguished: 1) from animate personal nouns, 2) from animate impersonal nouns, 3) from inanimate concrete nouns, 4) from abstract inanimate nouns, 5) from adjectives. An attempt to indicate means of transferring appellatives (nicknames) to categories of surnames conditioned by the characteristics of human perception, interpretation and categorization of reality was undertaken as well.
