The authoress describes the University of Charles-de-Gaulle-Lille III as an example of French university library operation. Next, the organization of French university librarianship is discussed. The importance of tradition and historical continuity in the recent transformation of French librarianship is presented. The article is concluded with the description of principles for the reform of French university libraries.
