From politics to ethnic community - the process of institutionalization of Algerian emigration in France as the model of ethnic awareness formation
Languages of publication
The French used to regard political and organizational mobilization of Algerians and other immigrants from the Northern Africa as the proof of their integration and successful socialization, of their acceptance and internalization of republican values. Yet more and more numerous immigrants' demands to recognize and accept their ethnic identity and distinct character began to disturb the state, which was afraid of loosing control over the process of reproduction of central values and political socializing. The article presents achievements of the second and the third generation of emigrants from Maghreb in the new country, their strategies of adaptation and in the way in which their ethnic mobilization is being shaped. It also discusses models of institutionalization and their evolution.
