To the general public Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) is mostly known as a film director, even though in his lifetime he managed to direct forty movies and as many as one hundred and seventy theatre productions. What kind of theatre director was Ingmar Bergman? To answer this question, the author of the article takes a close look at two plays, 'A Doll's House' (1879) by Henrik Ibsen, and 'Miss Julie' (1888) by August Strindberg, that were first put on by Bergman at the Residentztheater in Munich in 1981, and then at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm in 1985 (Miss Julie) and 1989 (A Doll's House).
