Among Bulat Okudzhava's poems there are a number of metaliterary ones, or rather ones with metaliterary traits, as purely metaliterary poems are few and far between. In most of his poems this quality appears only in some fragments. Okudzhava's metaliterariness focuses on two areas: the author himself, in the broad sense, and art criticism. Speaking of the artist and his creation, Okudzhava freely weaves his way in and out of various arts: literature, painting and music, and finds common denominators for all the three on many levels. His main benchmarks are the artist's personality, vocation, creative freedom, process of creation, objective and functions of art, and the cultural trend-setting and social status of the artist. Looking into these aspects, the paper analyses these poems by Okudzhava in which he turns to his own artistic experience. His non-literary statements are also used, as they explicate or corroborate what he says in his poems.
