Main indicators of international scientific cooperation include 8 groups: trips abroad; participation in international conferences; scales and destination of scientific emigration; number of international S&T agreements; scales of participation in international scientific organizations; awarded international prizes; R&D funding from abroad; publication activity. The first six groups are not commonly adopted by the international scientific community, while the Ukrainian statistics uses mainly the first two groups. Ukraine fails to estimate the publication activity, because the statistics office uses data coming from research organizations and universities, instead of relevant international databases. Evaluation of the publication activity in Ukraine in social sciences and humanities according to international standards shows a small share of publications in this field in the total amount of publications (about 3%, against 15% for developed countries), and strong yearly variations in the publications' number. The answer why Ukrainian researchers pose so badly in the scope of international publications may be found in the two reasons. The first one is related with the specificity of this field, and the second one is related to the specificity of evaluation of researchers' performance in Ukraine, where the evaluation criterion is linked to the number of publications in journals fixed in the so-called 'lists of the Higher Evaluation Commission, but not in the leading peer reviewed international journals
