Our ancestors used various means to protect themselves from the elements. Some were preventive, while others were applied only upon confrontation with the elements. This study focuses on texts that sought to overcome the elements through belief in the magical power of words and symbols. These texts took various forms. They were often part of domestic manuals, healing or incantation texts, but they also appear in prayer books. This study traces the magical means that the texts recommended for overcoming the elements. Through a comparison, it shows which means constitute a universal magical set and which ones may vary depending on the type of text or the element addressed.
