Having lived for twenty years after the World War II in Wroclaw, Professor Józef Andrzej Gierowski moved to Cracow in 1965, where he became the head of the Chair of the Early Modern Polish History. Nevertheless, he did not brake relations with the Wroclaw University, where he left friends and pupils. He maintained many contacts and relationships, taking active part in the scientific life of Wroclaw, among others participating in many publishing initiatives of the Wroclaw academic community. For these reasons in 1982 he was presented with the Merentibus Medal and in 1992 the honorary doctorate was conferred on him by the Wroclaw University
