We live in an information era. Information has become a popular commercial product. Processing and disseminating information have become important businesses. Storage, processing and access represent fewer and fewer problems, thanks to the new technologies (cheap tools with great storage capacities that are being handled with more and more common information skills). With the increase in quantity, more problems arise regarding relevancy, How can the existing subject representation and information retrieval tools of the databases answer this challenge? At what level are they able to solve the problem of quality information provision? The study is a survey of 50 different online reference databases, examining the characteristics of their subject representation solutions.
