The aim of the paper is comparison of two research disciplines dealing with fine arts: history of art and sociology of art. This comparison depends on four most important problem areas of disputes between historians of art and sociologists of art: (1) Problem of the qualifications to analyse art; (2) Dispute over methodology; (3) Dispute on the subject of research, and (4) Problem of application of knowledge about art. In conclusion the author analyses the possible relationships between history of art and sociology of art and distinguishes complementary structure (consisted of antagonistic or non-antagonistic elements) and structure based on separate objects of research.
