Scientific studies and observations of the negative consequences of so-called tree surgery changed of the range and manner of tree cultivation. A new trend known as arboristics (from 'arboricultura') has been developed on a global scale. Posts of tree controllers have been established in urban plant boards. Suitable courses are being conducted not only by vocational schools and engineering colleges, but M.A. studies on arboristics are being set up. Tree cultivation has entirely abandoned invasion operations, which disturb natural defensive mechanisms. At the same time, preference is being shown for operations improving the trees' habitat. Trees of particular value, both dendrologically and as regards composition, have been entrusted to the administrative supervision of conservators of historical monuments. In numerous voivodeships, however, they still remain in the hands of craftsmen who have at their disposal insufficient resources of knowledge. Numerous so-called surgical operations have produced outright harmful effects. More the reason for an urgent verification of the principles of tree treatment.

• prof. dr hab. inż., jest prezesem honorowym Międzynarodowego Towarzystwa Uprawy i Ochrony Drzew oraz przewodniczącym Europejskiej Rady ds. Drzew (EAC). Pracuje w Instytucie Architektury Krajobrazu Politechniki Krakowskiej. Pełni funkcję rzeczoznawcy Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa narodowego ds. parków, ogrodów, cmentarzy i krajobrazu kulturowego oraz rzeczoznawcy SITO. Jest autorem ok. 200 publikacji, współautorem książek: Pielęgnowanie drzew ozdobnych, Baumpflege heute Pazter, Handbook European Tree Worker Patzer, Tezaurus sztuki ogrodowej. W latach 1987- 1995 był redaktorem i autorem „Komunikatów Dendrologicznych”, a następnie „Zeszytów Dendrologicznych”. Był także organizatorem I Forum WKZ i WKP w Jachrance w 1986 r. poświęconemu nowemu podejściu do pielęgnowania drzew. Jest supervisorem EAC do certyfikacji w zakresie European Tree Worker i European Tree Technican.
