The author of this paper aims at presenting theoretical and practical transformations concerning the definition and significance of family. The controversies are connected with changes of traditional family model in western countries and in Poland. The base for these changes is the process of international integration including cultural transformation. Apart from these problems, the article also presents the changes of conditions of families in Poland in the light of subsidiary principle. It is the basis for the organization of social policy in the European Union.
