The paper describes the lifecycle of the North Sudanese peasant. The author, being both an eyewitness and conducting interviews, introduces, in a detailed manner, the rich achievements of local folklore, showing them against the background of the most important landmarks of human existence such as childbirth, circumcision, marriage or death. The fundamental rites and believes of the inhabitants of the Central Nile Valley are described and explained in the paper from the broader perspective of culture and religion of the Islam world as well as from the narrow viewpoint of Sudan. The author does not limit himself to the sphere of rites. He also offers an opportunity to look into the processes of upbringing, education, work or typical, everyday pastimes and amusements. The paper also shows how the current cultural reality of Northern Sudan changes, giving in to the influence of both extreme Islam theology as well as to the processes of westernisation and globalisation.
