The aim of this article is to show the role of folk universities in the field of formation of civic attitudes and the widely understood stimulation to activities of rural communities in Poland. The authoress discusses the problem both in the historical perspective, pointing to forms of realisation of M.F.S. Grundtvig's postulates in the twenty years between the two world wars as well as from the point of view of modern times. The background for the presentation of the role of the institutions discussed in the field of stimulation to activities of rural communities are social-economic transformations which are a factor in the quality of life in the rural areas,. Analysis of activities of the folk universities active at present concerns their two basic currents: the secular and the church one.
