The text written in 1902 describes the origins of the mediaeval city. It analyses likeness and diversity among the mediaeval cities. The author points out to the state-attributes present in the mediaeval guilds and their crucial role in the making of the mediaeval city. The text glorifies the results achieved by the mediaeval city in arts and sciences at the same time stressing the mutual aid and support offered by the mediaeval society. It also presents the causes of decay that put an end to the glorious period.
