The international conference, 'In Search of (Creative) Diversity: New Perspectives in Polish Literary and Cultural Studies Abroad', held in at the University of Toronto in February 2006, was a collaboration of four institutions: the University of Toronto, Indiana University, Ohio State University, and the Jagiellonian University. It was the first one of its kind in North America. It allowed participants to focus exclusively on Polish Studies, in particular the study of literature and culture, but it also gave scholars to discuss cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives on their own terms. All in all, the conference gave a wonderful sense of the richness and the theoretical and substantive vigor of the field, and its interconnectedness with multiple disciplines. The conference also served a vital function in terms of shaping future needs and directions for Polish Studies in North America. The final panel of the conference was devoted to a plenary discussion of how best to promote Polish Studies in the coming years; this discussion resulted in the development of four concrete projects.
