The Trouble with Autofiction: Roma Ligocka's Involuntary Autofictions

This article is divided into two parts. The first part outlines two concepts of autofiction on the basis of three studies which have recently been published and one that is about to be published in France. Their authors are Serge Doubrovsky (who coined the term), Vincent Colonna, Philippe Vilain and Philippe Gasparini. Vilain and Gasparini present, each in a different way and with a new set of data, the history and theory of autofiction in relation to a large number of texts, both French and foreign. They employ both Doubrovsky's idea of autofiction as well as its broader version, initiated by Genette. The latter, which involves 'self-invention' in a wider sense, is taken up by Colonna, who expands it still further to cover the whole field of fiction. In the second part of the article autofiction in the narrow sense, as suggested by Doubrovsky, is illustrated by an analysis of two novels by Roma Ligocka, 'The Girl in the Red Coat' and 'It's me alone'.
