The article deals with an unknown question from the history of economic relations between Poland and Norway in the first years after the end of WWII, a topic heretofore unexamined in Polish historiography. The authoress focused her attention on Polish-Norwegian trade contacts in 1945-1949 by basing herself on archival sources of Polish and Norwegian origin. Due to the unexpectedly extensive and interesting nature of the subject under examination, she has limited herself to presenting only its outline. Consequently, the article concentrates on three most important stages in mutual trade contacts between the two countries starting with the early days of May 1945 and up to the negotiations conducted in November 1948, which stabilised trade not only for 1949 but for years to come. She has documented that among the three aforementioned stages the most significant was the opening phase from the beginning of May to October 1945, when upon Norwegian initiative first contacts and trade talks were established via Moscow in extremely difficult circumstances; ultimately, they led to the signing of the provisional agreement of 29 August 1945 and then an additional protocol of 3 October of the same year. A special stage in the development of the titular trade contacts was composed of the talks and negotiations held in November and December 1946. Their outcome consisted of a presentation and discussion of proposals pertaining to commodity exchange and then a pertinent convention on trade exchange and payments as well as an additional protocol regulating the principles of credit for Poland and the ways in which it was to be repaid. The last of the discussed stages was composed of the negotiations conducted in Oslo in January 1948, which produced the bilateral trade convention signed on 4 February 1948. The debates held on Warsaw in November of the same year concerned the revival of the convention not only for 1949 but also for the next years. The importance of this stage lies in the fact that it concluded heretofore trade contacts, making it possible for the two sides to decide to concentrate only on the construction of a more profitable and wider commercial offer within the compensation trade conducted by them.
