The author enumerates the fields of interest in history in different countries. His idea is to demonstrate that the rebirth of historical thinking we note in Poland now does not constitute an exception all over the world. He reflects on the reasons of this rebirth (the fall of communism? the change of generations? the globalization? the more profound change in our culture?). The important point he is interested in is the question of how the studied phenomena will affect the history as an academic discipline. Whether it will be pushed back to its 19th century role, to serve the national interests, or whether it will have something to say to explain broader social problems too.
