The study - based upon an international survey about content representation in online databases - examines the Hungarian situation. It is a survey of 16 Hungarian reference databases, regarding their subject representation tools (number, source, notation, content and context). In international comparison, we have to admit that the existing level of subject representation in Hungarian databases is not sufficient for a more detailed content analysis. As the quantity of data available online is growing, we must develop more sophisticated services in order to represent scientific literature according to its value. This quality development could have a positive impact both on the literature and on the information seeking habits. We must find the way to ensure quality selection.
