The artistic quality of a musical audio recording depends to a significant degree on creative activities of the recording producer and the balance engineer. These professions do not have equivalent names in English and in German, as their functions are not identical in different traditions. Musical recording is a sound recording with certain technical and aesthetic parameters as well as a recording with artistic values containing work of art and its interpretation. We study special creative potential of both professions in the following areas: musical recording (the structure of the sound image), 'directing of musical recording' (complex system of devices implemented by the recording producer and reflecting his/her personal input), sound processing (characteristic skills of the balance engineer), natural flow of music (keeping the expression and the concept of interpretation within the work as a whole), perceptive evaluation of the musical recording (artistic experience gained by listening to a musical recording). As a future concept, we put forward a proposal to develop a method of analysis of specific elements of creative activities in musical and sound directing based on the analyses of internationally renowned recordings of classical music.
