Sound recording has accompanied the activity of memory institutions since its beginnings and it is an important part of cultural heritage and a valuable source. Taking into account the limited lifetime of traditional analogue sound carriers, it is necessary to maintain - at least in a selective way - the most valuable sound recordings through a careful digitalization thereof, utilizing the means for sound restoration. The endangered types of sound documents include mainly various forms of sound recordings on magnetic media. The comprehension of the basic principles of recording, protection and administration of media, defined in generally renowned methodologies, is a vital prerequisite for the digital conversion of those media.
