This examination is directed mainly towards theory. In analysing novels by writers such as Jan Johanides, Jan Milcak, Stanislav Rakus, Rudolf Sloboda, the authoress attempts to put her finger on what consists the subjects in modern prose. She shows that in fact the characters function is to examine the universal question of human existence, namely the relationship between the individual and society. The ensuing conflict is always resolved in favour of society, for without it the individual cannot exist.
