The paper is dedicated to the ideas of Pavol Dobsinsky presented in his book 'Reflections on the Slovak legends' which has been virtually ignored by the Slovak scholars since the end of the 1950s. Dobsinsky's interpretation of folkloric material was close to the conceptions of earlier mythological school based on the ideas of Romanism, in particular to the ideas of Russian scholar Alexander Afanasjev. In general, earlier mythological school has developed into various scientific trends in other Slavic countries and Europe. Dobsinsky's attempts to reconstruct Slavic mythology were not sustained in Slovakia and were perceived by the Slovak scholars as naive. To explain the reasons of this, the authoresses analyze Dobsinsky's ideas: (1) from the perspective of contemporary Slovak folkloric focuses; (2) in wider context of development the ideas of mythological school in the West and East.
