This polemical article aims to contribute to the wider discussion of the relation between philosophy and science, and likewise the relation between reason, rationality and faith. The author defends the view that any kind of thinking (rational, scientific thought included) implicitly involves faith. The author marks off two levels of faith: a) essential faith – faith justifying the basic ontological and epistemological starting points of our knowledge; and b) existential faith – faith which justifies the subjective sense of our life. The author is convinced that only when we conceive of faith as the constitutive basis of human reason will we adequately grasp the spiritual plurality of the contemporary world.
