The article summarizes the study on determining the minimum consumption thresholds through a basic needs' method (so called 'basket method'). The first part of the study presents methodological aspects - the basic need method, its genesis and application. In the second part, Polish contribution was presented to the application of the basic needs' method for determination of various poverty lines. Two successive points of the article are devoted to the modification of social minimum (SM), and subsistence minimum (ME) baskets. The last part of the study presents summary and conclusions.
