The article presents the problem of irony in Vladan Desnica's prose. Using the concept of Polish researcher Piotr Laguna about two types of irony: 'irony as a sign' and 'irony as an attitude' the authoress shows two phases of Desnica's works as two different ways to understanding the irony. In the first realistic phase called 'irony as a sign' she analyses concrete realization of irony in the text, by concentrating on tragic irony. In the second psychological-reflective phase, in which irony is understood as an attitude, the authoress characterizes it in the context of Socratic irony. This type of irony makes it possible to talk among the other things about subjection and post-romantic irony.
