The article focuses on one of forefathers and apostles of Russian contemporary gay literature, Eugene Kharitonov (1941-1981), a prose writer, poet, dramatist, and theatre director. For too long time the artist remained in hiding in the literary underground, which had a very pernicious effect on the reception of his literary output in Russia and abroad. In his lifetime, Kharitonov published his works mainly by 'samizdat' due to 'immorality' of their content and non-conformist attitude towards the authorities. In his biography, two oppositions were very important: 'me and the State' and 'me and my homosexuality'. As a man of the centre, amongst people, culture and the State, Kharitonov was an example of a tragic victim of the socio-political situation of the 1970s. The writer was born before his time and died at the wrong time, joining the host of martyrs destroyed by homophobia.
