The author analyzes educational policy and initiatives of the European Union and the Council of Europe for the benefit of intercultural education. Special attention was paid to the evolution of educational initiatives in the light of the social, demographic and cultural transformation of contemporary society. At present, the majority of European education systems take account of this dimension, which is concerned as much with the content as with methodology of teaching. Currently, the European Union and the Council of Europe broaden intercultural approach and wish to create a new dimension of intercultural education, making it a tool of agreement between cultures and nations.
