The occurrence of Roman denarii in early mediaeval contexts was observed as early as the beginning of the twentieth century. Roman coins were noticed then to have occurred in hoards alongside early medieval silver. Newer studies prove that Roman denarii would have been hidden also in graves. They are also found on settlement sites. Most of early medieval deposits containing Roman coins come from Polish lands, which may result from their position where early medieval trading trails crossed.
