The publisher of 'Politiques de la Revolution française' called Bronislaw Baczko 'the internationally recognized historian of Enlightenment and the French Revolution'. Baczko himself used to say that he is a historian of ideas or historian of philosophy, but by no means a philosopher. His work was understood in a quite different way by his disciples who considered him to be a philosopher because of the kind of questions asked to the main characters of his work and of the categories used. Baczko's identity was not, however, set in stone. In turned out, that evolving from his book on Rousseau, to whom he applied the category of alienation, absent in Rousseau's work, through the following of social hopes and dreams of the people of the Enlightenment in 'Lumieres de l'utopie' towards the understanding of the revolution, he created a historical work 'Ending the Terror' (Comment sortir de la Terreur) that sounded like a voice in a current political discussion. The last to-date Baczko's book, 'Politiques de la Revolution française', complements the previous one and continues the development, in which the self-identification of a thinker and the attempt to understand the revolution is intimately related to a dissimilar determination of his identity in his reception - in terms of the current-day, which is not, however, easily translatable into Polish reality, though allows to understand it better.
