The article is a contribution to the discussion about the influence of the conceptions of theoretical linguistics (in this case: semantic theories) on the lexicographical practice. The considerations are based on the analysis of the definitions of chosen names of the artefacts (some names of furniture, vehicles and crockery) in the contemporary general-purpose dictionaries of Polish. The authoress tries to answer the question whether the analyzed definitions use the propositions of semanticists concerning the methods of defining these expressions.
