This article will attempt to critically analyze the famous study 'The Misery of Smali States of Central Europe' - written immediately after Word War II by Istvan Bibo. Reaching deep into the history of the three Central-European States - Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary - the great Hungarian social thinker seeks to identify the common features and mechanisms that caused aberrations in the oncoming evolution of the societies of the region, that is, among others, to a deformation of political culture, the rise of a so-called 'antidemocratic' brand of nationalism, bitter territorial disputes, 'language wars' etc. In his study the author tries to verify the diagnosis and thesis stated by Bibo in order to confront them with the topical problems of our region and the whole of Europe.
