This essay deals with the issue of Polish reception of the culture of the Soviet Union period, not-as-yet touched upon in research on the gulag discourse. Five canonical works of this current are reflected upon - those by M. Wankowicz, B. Obertynska, G. Herling-Grudzinski, T. Wittlin, B. Skarga - and interpreted in view of the issues of mutual perception of the two nations involved and of creation of images of other nationalities in literature.
