The author discusses the 8th General Congress of Polish Historians in Cracow in 1958 from two points of view. On the one hand he analyzes the reaction of the Polish Communist Party's authorities to the debates that took places during the Congress with regard to the process of destalinization in Poland. On the other hand he discusses the process of the so-called 'thaw' in Polish historiography giving special attention to its decline
