FOLK PROSE IN THE COLLECTION OF SAMO CAMBEL AND VOLODYMIR HNATIUK - A SOURCE OF ETHNIC LINGUISTIC AND RELIGIOUS IDENTIFICATION OF SLOVAKS

Dialecticians, who consider coherent dialect manifestation a suitable material for language research, offer a large amount of written folklore texts. The dialectological monograph by Samuel Cambel 'The Slovak Language and its Place the Family of Slavic Languages' (Turciansky Sv. Martin 1906) brings a rich collection of different genres of folk prose from the region of Eastern Slovakia. A similar collection of folk prose from this region was composed also by the Ukrainian researcher Volodymyr Hnatiuk who carried out several research journeys to the Eastern Slovakia on the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The article deals with collecting activities of these two researchers who almost at the same time tried to explore the East Slovak region from the language, cultural, historical, ethnical and partly also ethnographical point of view. Collected texts of folk prose are a suitable research material mainly for folklorists because they are written in the original, authentic form. They thus represent narrative repertory of the eastern Slovak population on the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries. The study brings a comparative view on the efforts of Samuel Cambel and Volodymyr Hnatiuk. It points at both common and different moments in methodology of their research, in their aims and purposes and in a comparative principle it analyses the genre and thematic composition of both collections. A special attention is devoted to the religious and ethnic consciousness of the population of the multiethnic region of Eastern Slovakia.
